Something is probably interfering with your COM port!
If you're running Windows XP (X-tra Pain) this is very likely the problem, meaning that you'll have to shut down a few "services" first.
However, to gain more control over things, you may consider doing things manually instead of using the M-II.exe GUI.
1 - Make sure you have all the files on your local PC.
2 - Disconnect your PC network cable (as a precaution for later steps...).
3 - Shut down everything that might interfere with your COM ports, including Firewall and Antivirus software (Guess why I told you to disconnect the network...).
4 - Make sure the serial cable is connected from the PC to the card writer.
5 - Start whatever program you use to get the card writer into Phoenix mode, 3.58 MHz.
6 - Start the M-II.exe but do not use it further! Simply leave it up on your screen.
7 - You will now find three new exe-files in the same directory as the M-II.exe
8 - Start a DOS prompt window and change to the directory holding the exe-files.
9 - Run the command "detect -p1" (or -p2 if you use COM2) and make sure you don't get an error message. If you get the message "Failed to get ATR", it means that you are not communicating with the card, and you'll have to sort that problem out before proceeding. It might be cable related...
10 - Run the command "update -p1" (or -p2) to make sure the card has the latest operating system, supporting encrypted keys.
11 - Run the command "conax -p1" (or -p2) possibly with the additional parameter "-philips" which is required for some STBs.
12 - A number of asterisks (********) will now appear during the programming sequence, lasting approx. 40 sec. Make sure that you don't get an error message! If an error message appears, return to step 11 and try again.
13 - If things worked out OK, you can now shut down the M-II GUI, thereby removing the other exe-files (except detect.exe which you will have to remove manually).
14 - Remember to re-start all security related stuff before re-connecting your network cable!
This manual procedure will, as I said, give you more control of the programming procedure. And it will simplify any possibly required troubleshooting...
Good luck!
